Do you need it?

Strongly considered buying this over the less expensive F201r filter. However, after researching the quality of my tap water via the local utility (which was available online) and comparing it to the specs of the F601r, I realized that none of the extra stuff that the F601r filters out is actually in my tap water. The one possible exception is lead, but it's a newer home in California which already mandates low lead levels in residential plumbing. If you have an older home, it may be very worthwhile since corrosion in the plumbing can lead to leaching, but otherwise you really have to ask yourself whether it's necessary.

So, 1 star for scare tactics averaged with 5 stars b/c I'm sure it works fine in systems designed for it (like the less expensive F201r) gives us 3 stars overall. I prefer not to have money scared out of my wallet!

Gets the lead out

My 1984 home has lead soldered copper plumbing, and we are part of a set of high-risk homes the water utility tests each year for lead content. Our home usually tests above the EPA 90th percentile level for lead content, and even though that is still not a hazardous amount according to the EPA, we feel better not drinking or cooking with the water straight from the tap. This filter removes about 99.99999999999999% of everything nasty, and the water is fresh and tasty. The filters are expensive, but we only need to replace them every six months. That equates to less than $10/month for super-clean water and better peace of mind. They are easy to replace, and my local recycling facility accepts them for recycling (call ahead, always!). My InSinkerator instant hot/cold + filter system is new (2009 model), and I've never had a problem with installing these filters. We first had the F-201R model (came with the filter system) before switching to F-601R for the add'l lead filtration, and I had no problem installing this filter.
